Kahana is unique in
being the only remaining ahupua`a
in the major Hawaiian islands (Kauai, O`ahu, Moloka`i, Maui, and Hawai`i)
owned by one owner,
and the only one in the whole State
owned by the government.
In recognition of this rarity, the Kahana Valley State Park was renamed the Ahupua`a `o Kahana State Park in November 2000.
At 5,228.7 acres, Kahana is the second-largest state park in the state park system.1
Like all land in Hawaii, it was originally owned by the King. It is estimated that the ahupua`a may have had between 600 and 1,000 people before Western contact.
2 After the dying off of great numbers of the Hawaii people due to Western diseases, at the time of the Great Mahele, there were an estimated 200 people in the ahupua`a.3
Post-Mahele Awards
After the Great Mahele in 1848, the ahupua`a of Kahana was granted to Annie Keohokâlole,4 the mother of the King Kalâkaua and Queen Lili`uokalani, with 33 much smaller awards within the ahupua`a going to the maka`âinana and a high ali`i agent,
and for the school and the road (collectively referred to in this study as the maka`âinana awards).5
Keohokâlole received 5,050 acres, and the maka`âinana awards totaled less than 200 acres.6
One authority is of the opinion that "all or nearly all of the people of Kahana were given land or were in families who received land."7
While 200 acresBACKGROUND ON THE AHUPUA`A `O KAHANA 3 compared to 5,000 may seem inordinately small, the maka`ainana shares were among the most valuable in the ahupua`a,8 as they were the developed house lots (pahale) and taro lo`i. The remainder of the ahupua`a, while it did contain freshwater rights, rights in the Huilua fishpond, and certain fishing rights in the bay, also included vast tracts of undeveloped, and perhaps undevelopable, uplands.9 The Ahupua`a Award In 1856, Keohokalole and her husband Kapa`akea put all their holdings into an asset pool, a type of trust for the benefit of their son, David Kalakaua.10 As trustee of this asset pool, Keohokalole sold Kahana in May 1857 to AhSing (also known as Apakana), a Chinese merchant.11 Keohokalole's portion of the ahupua`a passed through the hands of a few other Chinese merchants12 before being bought by a land hui composed of Hawaiian members of the Church of Latter Day Saints,13 called the Ka Hui Ku`ai i ka `aina `o Kahana14 in 1874.15 The hui had 95 members. Kahana was divided in 115 shares, with most members getting one share, and a few receiving multiple shares. The land tenure of the Hui was more similar to the pre-Mahele usage than to strict Western land usage. Each shareholder had his or her own houselot (pahale) and taro lo`i, but all had an undivided interest in the pasture and uplands, and in the freshwater rights, ocean fishing rights, and Huilua fishpond.16 Each member was allowed an equal share in the akule that were caught, and could have up to six animals running freely on the land (additional animals would be paid at a quarter per year).17 Some of the farmable common lands were leased to rice planters for the group benefit.18 This started a change in the agricultural nature of the valley, as the taro lo`i began to be converted to rice paddies. This change continued as more lands were leased to rice farmers, and as shares were purchased by Kane`ohe Ranch, both for their income when leased to rice planters, and for their own use as pasture for the ranch's cattle.19 The Maka`ainana Awards While the maka`ainana all held their land awards up to 1873, the advent of the Mortgage Act of 1874, allowing non-judicial foreclosure, spelled the beginning of the end for these individuals owners. This Act allowed the mortgagees of the relatively unsophisticated rural landowners to foreclose without the safeties of court procedures. The lands were gradually either mortgaged and foreclosed on,20 or sold outright21 to major players such Kane`ohe Ranch and Mary Foster22 (a member of the prominent Robinson family) and her husband Thomas.23 Mary Foster Mary Foster became involved in purchasing interests both in the maka`ainana lands and in the Hui ahupua`a shares. She used some of her shares to build aKAHANA: WHAT WAS, WHAT IS, WHAT CAN BE 4 renowned home in Kahana, which was the subject of the popular song, "Beautiful Kahana." Mary Foster strongly objected to Kâne`ohe Ranch's practice of burning off the indigenous trees and ground cover to create pasturage out of native forests. She began a "bitter economic and legal struggle" with the Ranch for control of Kahana.24 An out of court settlement was reached in 1901, in which Mary Foster bought out the Ranch's interest, including their leases, in the Hui shares, giving her a controlling interest in Kahana.25 Even after the settlement, she continued to acquire shares in Kahana, both from original owners and from other land "collectors" such as Lincoln McCandless, increasing her dominance.26 In that way, Mrs. Foster gained even more of the shares, until she finally held 97% of the land by 1920.27 By the time of her death, she held all but six parcels in the valley, or well over 99%. From the standpoint of preserving the Hawaiian rural lifestyle, it is a pity that the shares were made alienable and eventually lost by the maka`âinana whose families had lived there time out of mind. However, if the ahupua`a had to be lost, losing it to an owner like part-Hawaiian Mary Foster, who wanted to preserve its natural state and fought burning the forests for pasture, was the best of the possible options. The Hawaiian families of Kahana, as well as the members of the different ethnic groups who had moved to Kahana, remained on the land on month-to-month tenancies. Foster continued to lease much of the lands she acquired, and to the crops of the Chinese rice planters were gradually added the crops of the Japanese sugar cane farmers. Mrs. Foster died in 1930, and Kahana passed to her estate and was held in trust for her heirs. Over the ensuing years, Kahana remained a quiet valley, with a peaceful rural lifestyle incorporating many Hawaiian cultural values. The multicultural mix of people in the ahupua`a fit into the Hawaiian rural lifestyle.28 Sugar production was phased out and ceased in the 1930s, and many residents drifted away and moved to Honolulu. Legislative Action When World War II broke out, the military moved the Japanese families out, and began to use the valley to practice jungle warfare,29 which destroyed some of the archeological sites in the valley. The population dwindled in the 1940s-50s and was unable to support organized fishing, or to fix the breach in the fishpond walls after the tidal waves in those decades.30 The lifestyle at this time was rural with Hawaiian roots: the residents still used the ancient Huilua fishpond to gather fish; the traditional hula kahiko was practiced and passed down, and some lo`i still produced taro. The significant majority of the residents were still Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian, but members of other ethnic groups, particularly Chinese and Filipino, had settled in as well.BACKGROUND ON THE AHUPUA`A `O KAHANA 5 In the early 1950s, the Legislature apparently was interested in purchasing Kahana for $100,000, but no action was taken.31 In 1955, the Robinson Agency, acting as the agent for the Foster Estates, contracted with a planner for feasibility studies on Kahana. The report recommended making an authentic South Sea island resort village – an inn with 20 rooms, creating a small lake in the valley, and a nine-hole golf course. There was a cheaper back-up agricultural plan.32 Nothing happened as a result of this plan. As Oahu continued to become built up, the remote beauty of Kahana became of more interest: heiress Doris Duke reportedly wanted to purchase Kahana and use its bay for boat races.33 In 1962, the Legislature appropriated, but the State did not expend, $300,000 to "complete the purchase of remaining beach and shoreline makai of Kamehameha Highway" at Kahana Bay Park (the City and County of Honolulu already held the rest).34 A study on usage of the valley as a park was done, but no action was taken.35 Also in 1962, a private foundation presented a plan to create a scientific botanical garden.36 In 1965, John J. Hulten, real estate appraiser, produced a remarkable report for the Department of Land and Natural Resources, entitled Report Covering the Proposed Park Development of Kahana Valley.37 He found that Kahana was ideally suited to be a regional park, offering seashore water sports, mountain camping, and salt and freshwater fishing, and a tropical botanical garden. "Properly developed it will be a major attraction" with 1,000,000 visits annually."38 The "proper development" he had in mind was astonishing: he wrote that Kahana can provide 600 "developable acres" for camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and swimming, and foresaw over 1,000 camping sites plus cabins, restaurant, and shops.39 He said that a hotel and other commercial buildings could be developed,40 and wanted the creation of a 50 acre lake.41 All of this development would be assisted by a botanical garden and a mauka road from Likelike Highway to Kahana.42 What was to be the fruit of this rampaging development? Hulten pulled "preference factors" out of thin air43 to estimate the visits to Kahana that this development would bring in. He estimated an initial "preference factor" of .483 visits to Kahana for every one to Waikiki (i.e., 480,000 visits to Kahana for every 1,000,000 visits to Waikiki), and by the time of full development on Kahana in 1985, 4,500 – 5,000 residents visiting Kahana every Sunday.44 One can only speculate as to why Mr. Hulten, who was also a State Senator, was so eager to push such a dramatically overdeveloped Kahana. It can be noted that in 1964, the total tax assessed value of Kahana was only $2,328,664.45 In July of 1964, it was reclassified from agricultural to conservation, which if anything should have made the value drop. Hulten estimated the value of the water in Kahana at $2,450,000.46 In 1965, the Legislature did approve the purchase and appropriated $1,000,000 for the first of five $1,000,000 payments.47 That offer, however, was rejected by the heirs on the ground that the State was not legally obligating itself to pay the fullKAHANA: WHAT WAS, WHAT IS, WHAT CAN BE $5,000,000, as the Legislature could not legally bind future legislatures to pay the remaining costs.48

Article after article after television human interest segment informs us about personal risk factors such as smoking and being overweight (although 70 percent of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have none of these factors) and about genetic risks (which only account for 10 percent of breast cancers.) We are bombarded with stories about the importance of getting mammograms and other tests. Then there are the survivor stories (usually about women much younger, whiter and cover-girl prettier than the average breast cancer survivor) that pull at our heartstrings. But there is very little mention of environmental factors such as auto exhaust, and chemicals like parabens and phthalates that we are exposed to every day.The most deafening silence, however, is about radiation, which is a 100 percent known cause of cancer. We are exposed to radiation in a variety of ways, through X-rays, CT scans and mammograms, but also by living near a nuclear power plant or having been exposed to weaponry that uses depleted uranium.Leuren Moret is geoscientist who has been working for a number of years to raise awareness about the dangers of radiation, an issue she became concerned about after hearing Native American women who live near areas where nuclear weapons have been tested talk about cancer and other health problems they are experiencing and by a visit to Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan. In this interview, she talks about what we know about the relationship between radiation and breast cancer.Lucinda Marshall: In your recent article published in Namaste magazine, "Populations Exposed to Environmental Uranium: Increased Risk of Infertility and Reproductive Cancers," you wrote about a scientific study that found that "radiation is the only known cause of breast cancer in mice" and about findings that show that Navajo women who live near uranium mining operations have very high rates of breast cancer. What does that tell us about the connection between uranium and radiation and cancer?Leuren Moret: The scientific study that found "radiation is the only known cause of breast cancer in mice" was conducted at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, home of the Manhattan Project -- the World War II atomic bomb development project which produced the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs -- and where they have been studying the biological/environmental effects of radiation for 68 years. After billions of dollars in research funds, however, they could never identify the cause of breast cancer in women.The newest published peer-reviewed study, by a Navajo researcher, provides the scientific evidence published by U.S. government sources that low levels of uranium in drinking water, below EPA drinking water standards, is an estrogen and hormone disruptor. The animal studies are important because we have the same hormones and similar estrogen responses as animals.Before 1945, cancer mortality was very rare. Large increases in cancer mortality in the past 100 years begin with the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs dropped on Japan in 1945. A Japanese government map of the major causes of death in Japan from 1899 to 2004 shows that cancer mortality increased rapidly after 1945. With the introduction of each new nuclear technology since 1945 -- atmospheric testing, nuclear power plants, depleted uranium -- it is obvious that ionizing radiation is a major cause of cancer globally, and uranium is a major radioactive component of nuclear weapons, including depleted uranium weapons systems introduced to the battlefield in 1991 in Gulf War I.This breast cancer map from Centers for Disease Control data (see below illustration) identifies that within a 100-mile radius of nuclear reactors is where two-thirds of all U.S. breast cancer deaths occurred between 1985 and 1989. The map (see below illustration) of nuclear power plants in the U.S. identifies them as the major cause of breast cancer in the U.S., as well as nuclear weapons labs in New Mexico, Idaho, Washington and California. This is further confirmed by the breast cancer clusters identified in Japan and California, which occurred where it rained the day the Chernobyl radiation cloud passed over and the rain deposited the fission products in the environment.Breast Cancer Deaths (1985-89) and Nuclear Power Plants
Marshall: Given that radiation is a known cause of cancer, it is really frustrating to me that it gets so little attention in the popular media's discussion of breast cancer. In fact, most of what we read and hear is focused on finding "the cure" rather than the cause. Why do you think that is?Moret: Western science was set up and established in London beginning in the 1600s by the Royal Society, to serve the needs of the international bankers and the industrialists. For that reason, much of Western science is actually "politicized science." In the past century, the financier elite were heavily involved in getting rich from world wars and the manufacture of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) that Western science has developed. The health effects of those WMDs must be hidden from the public or they would catch on to WMDs as the cause of huge increases in chronic illnesses and refuse to pay the taxes that secretly support development of WMDs. The Atomic Energy Commission and the military set up the EPA, NIH, NCI and CDC to hide the health and environmental effects of nuclear technologies from the public. It took me eight years doing research 18 hours a day to discover this truth. The University of California is the main WMD contractor for the international financial elite, and for that reason it will forever be known as "the university that poisoned the world."The pharmaceutical companies that manufacture breast cancer drugs fund the breast cancer NGOs, so they control the focus in the popular media on finding "the cure." They would be acting against their own best interests if they identified the cause.We had a monumental battle in the City of Berkeley with a resolution we passed Oct. 10, 2000, naming October as "Stop Cancer Where it Starts Month," which focused on the cause and prevention of cancer, even naming ionizing radiation as a cause. But we did it!Marshall: It strikes me as quite peculiar that since genetic damage caused by radiation is cumulative over a lifetime that the medical community advocates that women, particularly those with no risk factors, get routine yearly mammograms. I'm also wondering about the use of radiation as a treatment for breast cancer. According to Breast Cancer Fund's "State of the Evidence 2008, "Women older than age 55 derive less benefit from radiation therapy in terms of reduced rate of local recurrence and may face increased risks of radiation-induced cardiovascular complications, as well as secondary cancers such as leukemias and cancers of the lung, esophagus, stomach and breast. Using SEER data from the National Cancer Institute, researchers showed a 16-fold increased relative risk of angiosarcoma of the breast and chest wall following irradiation to a primary breast cancer. That seems like an awfully dangerous "cure" to me.Moret: Dr. John W. Gofman was a very rare radiation researcher, citizen scientist, and a gift to humanity. He was a physicist and an M.D., and worked on the biological effects of radiation at the Lawrence Livermore Lab until they cut off his research funds and he returned to the UC Berkeley faculty. His books, Preventing Breast Cancer (1996) and Radiation From Medical Procedures in the Pathogenesis of Cancer and Ischemic Heart Disease (1999), are extremely important research works which identify the dangers of ionizing radiation in medical procedures. His work was acknowledged in the recent BEIR VII report by the National Academy of Sciences. His was a rare voice of sanity warning us about the extreme dangers of mammograms. He told me that for every case of breast cancer identified through mammograms, five new cases of breast cancer are caused by the diagnostic use of radiation in mammograms. It sounds like a good way, for the medical industry, to generate repeat business and large profits.Marshall: I also want to ask you what your thoughts are on the new molecular breast imaging (MBI) test, which is reportedly more effective than mammograms at finding breast cancers in dense breast tissue, but exposes women to 8 to 10 times more radiation than they receive with mammograms.Moret: If the molecular breast imaging test exposes a woman to 8 to 10 times more radiation than mammograms, and mammograms are known to create five new cases of breast cancer for every case they identify, then it is not an option. I think the best option for women is to regularly practice breast self-exams.Marshall: It seems to me that if we really want to "cure" breast cancer, we need to work toward preventing it by limiting our exposure to known carcinogens, especially radiation. Can you elaborate on what kind of research needs to be funded and what kinds of policy changes are needed, and steps that we as individuals can take to ensure that we refocus our efforts to end breast cancer?Moret: I think it is very clear from the data I have gathered from governments around the world, including U.S. government data, that ionizing radiation is the main cause of breast cancer ... and other cancers. The focus now should be on educating the public about how to minimize exposure risk to ionizing radiation. Drinking water and dairy products are the two main pathways of exposure to ionizing radiation. If you Google Video my name, Leuren Moret, there are many interviews and presentations of mine on the Internet providing the information people need to understand more about this issue.Reverse osmosis filters should be in every home to purify the drinking water and remove radioactive isotopes from the water. The filter systems are about $500, which is very cheap compared to the cost of radiation-caused illnesses. The global atmospheric pollution of Planet Earth with depleted uranium from our radioactive battlefields in Iraq, Yugoslavia and Afghanistan is contaminating drinking water globally. Each day as the depleted uranium bombing continues in faraway countries, the need for an effective water filter system is more important because the uranium is here in two weeks. Uranium levels in Los Angeles drinking water doubled in 2007 alone -- in just one year.Being aware of which dairies are located downwind from nuclear power plants is critical in purchasing dairy products. For example, in California, two main dairy regions are located in the Fresno area, which is directly downwind from Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant, and the Imperial Valley area, which is downwind from San Onofre nuclear power plant.The most shocking discovery I made is a dairy industry report on widespread use of imported contaminated milk protein powder in junk food. Although contaminated with radioactivity, foot and mouth disease, mad cow disease, bubonic plague and drugs, it is imported and used by U.S. food manufacturers. They use it because it increases profits.Most aspects of breast cancer can be linked to profits, unfortunately, rather than a woman's right to have a healthy body. We need to take the profit out of breast cancer. Lucinda Marshall the founder of the Feminist Peace Network. The criminal acts of war on October 26 against both Syria and Pakistan by U.S. armed forces violates the sovereignty of both countries and must be roundly condemned. The attempt by the Bush administration to justify them by invoking an expanded theory of a right to carry out acts of war on any country's territory without permission or even consultation with the country's government is a complete repudiation of the principle of national sovereignty on which the U.N. charter is based.
These acts of war are unjustified and illegal, and can lead to wider U.S. wars in the Middle East and South Asia. The U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have already cost hundreds of thousands of deaths and over $1 trillion. At the same time, the entire world is in the grip of the largest economic catastrophe since the great depression. It is more urgent than ever that all the U.S. troops be brought home now and money be used for human needs, not newly expanded wars of aggression whether in Syria or Pakistan or Iran.

The International Action Center condemns the U.S. attacks of October 26 in Syria and Pakistan. Eight Syrian civilians died in the latest U.S. attack, including three children. Washington first refused to admit a U.S. role in the attack. Then the U.S. State Department defended it as a new and provocative strategy – the U.S. military forces can attack across any border of any country whenever they think it might give them a military advantage.
As U.S. Special Forces moved into Syria, a U.S. drone aircraft flew from Afghanistan into Pakistan and killed 20 Pakistanis. The Pentagon is not only expanding its war drive, it is presenting this expansion as a dangerous new doctrine.
This is the arrogant behavior that led to the two current disastrous wars that more than 70 percent of people in this country—and 90 percent in the world oppose.
Throughout the world people and governments have greeted this war doctrine with the hostility it deserves. Syria condemned the attack as "terrorist aggression". Russia, China and Iran condemned the attack for violating Syrian sovereignty. Even U.S. client states and allies had to dissociate themselves from the attack. This included the pro-U.S. Prime Minister Fouad Siniora of Lebanon, the U.S. client regime in Egypt, the Arab League and the rightist French government of Sarkozy. Even the puppet Iraqi regime has criticized the attack.
Faced with such broad opposition abroad, the Pentagon tried to build support at home by claiming it had killed an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq agent. While there is no way to independently check this information, it is interesting that al-Qaeda sources say the person named has been dead since 2004. Since we've heard nothing but lies out of Washington since "weapons of mass destruction," there's no reason to believe these new "terrorist" stories from the White House. To the Pentagon every peasant family in Syria and every wedding party in Pakistan are considered "terrorist" gatherings.
This new aggression raises the danger that Bush, Cheney and the rest of the gang of war profiteers will try to use their last months in office to start a new war—perhaps against Iran. They were frustrated a year ago in this effort when 16 U.S. spy agencies publicly exposed the lack of evidence that Iran was manufacturing nuclear weapons, Washington's favorite excuse for new aggression.
With the cooperation of both political parties and the media, from 2001 to 2003 Bush led the U.S. into two major wars of aggression and occupation, in Iraq and Afghanistan. These wars have caused hundreds of thousands of deaths, cost over a trillion dollars and turned into quagmires for the Pentagon. While they have isolated Bush, he still has three months to cause far greater destruction. And neither of the major presidential candidates is confronting and condemning the invasion of Syria or the attacks on Pakistan.
This is a time when the global economy is in crisis. Millions face unemployment, the loss of their homes, savings and futures.
Under these circumstances, it is up to independent anti-war forces to protest this latest example of blatant U.S. military aggression, to mobilize to condemn the invasion of Syria, the attacks on Pakistan and to demand: "bring the troops home now and stop further war adventures. We need jobs, housing and health care, not endless war."

Washington, Jan. 8 - The United States, through the inactivity of the Navy Department, is likely to lose the only coaling station of which it stands in real need. Nothing has been done since 1884, when the Pearl Harbor site in the Hawaiian Islands became available, beyond a number of surveys which have abundantly demonstrated the excellence of this harbor as a site for a naval station.
Note: A deed from King David Kalakaua was claimed for by the KSBE - Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estates because it was done in 1876 from King Kalakaua to Mataio Kekuanaoa (father of Kamehameha IV, V, Victoria Kamamalu, Moses, Paalua, etals.) and his wife Kamaikui/Grace Kamaikui (mother of Hueu Davis, Kale Davis, and Peke Davis. Queen Emma was adopted by Dr. TCB Rooke alone and was regarded as an adopted child.) Important are the facts that Mataio Kekuanaoa died in 1868 and Grace Kamaikui died in 1866.
This means that the Pearl Harbor claims by the U.S. is a fraud. The owners of Pearl Harbor, Halawa Valley/Ahupuaa are the John Young's descendants and heirs. Many exist today.
This also means that the WAR over Pearl Harbor was a FRAUD, and hundreds of thousands of people died needlessly......serious business folks......because many lives were lost over Pearl Harbor including the use of multiples of atomic bomb tests in the U.S., in the Marshall Islands, Hawaiian islands, Nagasaki, Japan, and Hiroshima, Japan! , etc.
The partiality of the Navy Department for the more distant Pago Pago as against Pearl Harbor is surprising to those who know England's ambition for securing the site on the Hawaiian Islands and the desire of the French and Germans to the same end. Pearl Harbor is regarded by these maritime nations as the best site for a war supply depot in the Pacific. Once secured by England, it places her principal station 2,700 miles nearer the Pacific seaports than the single coaling station and supply depot which this country owns, for Pago Pago is 5,000 miles from the California ports, while Pearl Harbor is 2,300 miles. The latter will serve at once as an aid in the protection of the Pacific coast cities and of the western entrance of the Nicaragua Canal, if it be completed under American control.
Note: The French did survey the Pacific Ocean and England, U.S. funded further studies in the Pacific. 3,000 miles was the determined amount of miles that the U.S. claimed for outside of the contiguous U.S. All free nations saw that as a threat. Although Pago Pago was brought up, the U.S. was not able to move and assume 5,000 miles because Japan, other nations would be within that range. The U.S. move was based on the 'Monroe Doctrine'. This in effect put all nations on alert.
In reality, the U.S. President and Congress have limitations of only 300 miles outside of the contiguous U.S. according to the U.S. Supreme Court documented in 1996.
After the criminal dethronement of Hawaii's Queen, the U.S. grabbed for Hawaii, England grabbed for Aetearoa/New Zealand, and the Germans grabbed for the Samoan Islands.
Our Hawaiian islands, Aetearoa, and Samoan Islands were known as the Pacific Empire and was pulled together through treaties by Kamehamameha.
The bankrupt nations had invested in the slave nation U.S. Civil War, losses were great and the U.S. was able to borrow from the German Jews who expected a 10% return in interest. A U.S. representative approached King Kalakaua and our House of Nobles for a loan and were declined because payment would not have been for thousands of years ---only interest amounts would have been given.
Kamehameha III in our Hawaiian islands passed the anti-slavery law in 1852, the American Civil War financed by France, England, and the U.S. sufferred great losses and owed to the Bank of England.
In 1865, the U.S. passed the anti-slavery law with nearly exact wording as Kamehameha III's anti-slavery law.
The remote Pago Pago might as well be in the Atlantic for all the value a station at that place would be in protecting either the Pacific possess alone or any interests she may have at Nicaragua, and Pago Pago might as well be under the British flag if the English Government is to secure the right to coal her vessels and repair her ships in Pearl Harbor. This is what the English Government is striving for and will probably be in possession of when the existing treaty between the United States and the Hawaiian Government shall have expired. This will be in 1894, and although a new treaty is now pending, which may take the place of the present convention, before the date of expiration, there is a possibility that the privilege which the United States now possesses on the Island of Oahu may be lost. In which event, the English are pretty sure to outgeneral the French and the Germans in securing the most important and valuable naval station in the Pacific.
Note: The date of the article in the New York Times was January 9, 1893 or seven (7) days before the move by Americans in Hawaii to assume the Hawaiian islands/Hawaiian government/Hawaiian archipelago/Kingdom of Hawaii/Hawaiian Kingdom/He Mokupuni Pae Aina o Hawaii.
The Pearl Harbor Treaty was expected to expire in 1894. Queen Liliuokalani documented the U.S. as having breached the Law of Nations, she was criminally dethroned by conspirators/PIRATES/terrororists/treasonous persons in Hawaii who long sought the island paradise since they stepped foot on our ancient lands.
The conspirators/PIRATES/terrorists/treasonous persons under direct U.S. planned, premeditated orders criminally assumed a neutral, non-violent nation, whose Queen denied them loans for WARS against others, pay for WAR debts, etc. criminally assumed a friendly nation, moved to PIRACY and made treaties with their own selves, their own nation, the U.S.
All nations since 1893 have been on alert against the International PIRATES who move to enslaven all people of color/exterminate all people of color, etc. and move towards One World Order, etc.

CD-ROM multimedia, that ultimate hybrid, keeps borrowing old forms as it tries to become something more than an interesting concept with great potential.
'Critical Mass: America's Race to Build the Atomic Bomb' (Corbis Corporation, about $50) is multimedia as coffee-table book. The design is attractive. The visual (and in this case, audible) contents are striking. But initial admiration eventually gives way to a nagging sense that one is getting a gloss on the story rather than the story itself.
The CD-ROM introduces the historical setting with a documentary prelude as breathlessly overwrought as any 1940's newsreel. The program then sets you free to roam at random. One possible destination is a less frantic documentary, The Los Alamos Story, which recounts a rather sketchy chronology of the events leading up to the first nuclear blast.
The focus on Los Alamos continues with a self-guided tour of the original atomic development site. Panoramic artist's renderings (described as 3-D, which they are not) let you swivel your virtual gaze 360 degrees from various vantage points, a cute but ultimately uninformative touch, particularly when period photos 'put you there' more effectively. Clicking on certain buildings launches short documentaries about their functions; unfortunately, the theater and commissary are described much more convincingly than the technical facilities.
Biographies of 13 crucial figures of atomic history are offered in screens of illustrated text. Among those figures, Niels Bohr, Robert Oppenheimer, Richard Feynman and Enrico Fermi are also given narrated biographies. This material is among the most successful sections of the disk, but in part because its creators can have no idea about the order in which you will read it, it gives you only the dimmest sense of chronology or of how the nuclear discoveries of the early 20th century built upon one another. Because tricky scientific concepts generally receive mentions instead of explanations, you get a better view of the scientists as people than as scientists.
Timelines offer extra information in five categories: atomic events, scientists, popular culture, political history and military technology. The images and sounds are often revealing, including a 1915 'Treat 'em Rough' recruitment poster for the Tank Corps, a postwar Kix Atomic Bomb Ring, the Buchanan Brothers' country gospel song 'Atomic Power' and newsreel footage of the convicted atomic spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. While the explanatory text is pithy and well-written, it rarely amounts to more than a paragraph or two per image.
A clever 'atomic atlas' of the world lets you see when countries acquired nuclear weapons and track sites of nuclear detonations, accidents, reactors and uranium mining over time. The accident list is particularly interesting, but cries out for more explanation. A particularly ghastly accident, for example, is described in just three terse words: 'Chernobyl reactor explodes.' The consequences, left unexplained, might seem less important than many more trivial occurrences.
A section of the program called 'Beyond Trinity' displays postwar images, but its lack of context makes it little more than a slide show of mysterious images. 'A patient with a cancer of the chest wall is about to receive an injection of radioactive gallium 72 for therapeutic purposes,' reads the caption of a photograph from 1951. Was this technique in any way as successful as the equally unexplained 'gamma knife surgery' depicted in a 1989 photo? The producers give us not a hint.
This willful failure to engage with the material is particularly galling in the 'archives' section, whose original documents have been beautifully digitized right down to multiple classification and declassification stamps in various shades of red. Only terse captions give us any clue to the significance of this tantalizing material. Who are the experimenters and who are the subjects in the 1944 letter captioned 'Plutonium Tests on Humans?' Is the blandly labeled 1943 'Letter from Oppenheimer' to Fermi really discussing the concept of 'radioactively poisoned foods' as a possible weapon? Are we meant to admire Feynman's assertiveness in a 1951 letter to Fermi from Rio de Janeiro challenging 'Yukawa's meson theory with pseudoscalar mesons gradient coupling' or merely chuckle at his remarks, nine pages of dense mathematical rumination later, about going to Copacabana beach to get ideas? The editors remain silent.

"My co-worker had her purse stolen while she was at Costco. She reported it stolen to store security who then called the police. It took the police a while to get there, probably because it wasn't a high priority situation. She filed the report then headed straight home. By the time she got home, within two hours, her house had been cleaned out! All the TVs, computers, jewelry, artwork, rugs, fishing poles, stereos, etc. were taken. It was definitely a group effort as they recovered walkie-talkies that the thieves had left behind. It is not uncommon for purses to be stolen but most people don't think to run home, the address of which is typically on something in their purse, to protect their valuables there! Most people think about having to call their credit card companies, which is what my friend did. By the time my girlfriend called one of her credit card companies the thieves had already filled up their gas tank. These thieves work really, really fast. So spread the word. The idea is to be one step ahead of the bad guys. If your purse is stolen or missing, tell the police where you live so they can stake out your house as a precaution! "

one below ... she and my niece were stopped at a light, a man walked thru the

the window and he didn't try to open the door, but he reached in his pocket
and pulled out a hammer, made a motion like he was going to bash the window with it.
Luckily the light changed and she drove away.

However, when she checked her card's statement some time afterwards, there were two $50 charges added in addition to her purchase. Upon investigation, she found out that because she did not press the 'CLEAR' button on the pump, the employee inside the store was able to use her card's stored information to purchase his/her own gas! To keep this from happening, after you get your receipt, you must press the 'CLEAR' button or your information will be stored until the next customer inserts their card. I, for one, love the idea that there are superfoods–certain edibles that go the extra mile in terms of nutritional chutzpah. They may not leap tall buildings, but superfoods are purported to fight the evil villains of heart disease, high cholesterol, cancer and a host of other diseases. Blueberries, for example, have become a superfood darling for their powerful punch of antoxidants–and I have to say, they do seem pretty mighty to me.
That said, I think some of the trendy superfoods are stealing the spotlight from the true heart of the matter–from the everyday heroes. It seems to me that almost any grain or produce that is grown organically, unprocessed and prepared gently, has much to offer. I just can't see a list of ten superfoods that earn obvious rank. In fact, if you look at 10 "Top 10 Superfoods" lists, you will see that they vary widely.
The truth is, most good food from nature is pretty super. So with that in mind, I like taking a seasonal approach. Rather than debating the merits of acai berries over goji berries, I prefer to look at what's in season, and work with the nutritional workhorses that I can get here and now. These are my favorites for fall, based primarily on nutritional variety and strength, but that also give me that primal, sensuous satisfaction that comes with eating what's in season:
Sweet Potatoes and Pumpkin
I go crazy for these flavors come fall, and no wonder: The dark orange vegetable family outdoes all others in vitamin A content. Sweet potatoes are also packed with antioxidants, vitamin C, calcium, and potassium. Other dark orange vegetable standouts include pumpkin, carrots, butternut squash, and orange bell peppers.
Cruciferous Vegetables
Crucifers such as broccoli, cabbage, kale, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, collards and turnips contain indole alkaloids that may help prevent cancer. They are also high in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Along with their fabulous flavor, once you get the hang of cooking them, they may have an added bonus: they may help bolster memory as you age. Researchers at Harvard Medical School found that women who eat the most of these foods are the least likely to be forgetful.
Pomegranates
Pomegranates have very high antioxidant activity, offering brain and memory protection. And research shows that drinking pomegranate juice may help with lowering the risk for hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis.
Beets
The pigment that gives beets their super-beautiful fuschia depth-betacyanin-is also a powerful cancer-fighting agent. Beets' potential effectiveness against colon cancer, in particular, has been demonstrated in several studies. Beets are also particularly rich in the B vitamin folate.
The Alliums
Garlic, onions, leeks, scallions, chives and shallots contain sulfur compounds that may protect against heart disease and some cancers, they can all help the liver eliminate toxins and carcinogens.
Beans
An excellent source of protein, antioxidants, folic acid, potassium, dietary fiber and complex carbohydrates, beans are flavorful, nutritionally dense, inexpensive and versatile. Read about heirloom varieties and cooking tips.
Olive oil
Several large studies suggest that the monosaturated fat in olive oil is good for the heart. Olive oil lowers bad cholesterol levels and increases good cholesterol. It is hgih in antioxidants–and is one of the superstars of the Mediterranean diet. Recent research shows that heart-attack survivors on a Mediterranean diet had half the death rates of those on an ordinary low-fat diet.
Tea
The caffeine content in tea is useful for stimulating alertness, mood and motivation, but is also a rich source of the antioxidant called catechins. Studies suggest that catechins protect the artery walls against the damage that causes heart disease and prevents formation of blood clots. It also does wonders for the spirit on a cool autumn day.
Red Wine
Grapes provide vitamin C, vitamin B1 and vitamin B6–red grapes also contain powerful phytochemicals (especially phenolics) that may help decrease risk of cardiovascular disease. These phenolic compounds are housed mostly in the skin of the red grapes, which is what makes red wine red. Resveratrol, a polyphenolic stilbene found in the skins of red fruits including grapes, may be responsible for some of the health benefits ascribed to the consumption of red wine. Resveratrol has been shown to have anti-oxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activity.
